Role overview

The Technical Writer is responsible for creating and updating written content. This can include, but is not limited to, manuals, processes, user guides and external communications, to support various roles within the organisation.

This role is accountable for communicating complex technical information in a clear and concise manner. The Technical Writer will ensure technical concepts are easily understood to the intended audience, such as internal staff, school administrators and other end users.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

Technical writing

  • Create various documentation including user guides (internal and external), instruction guides, technical specifications and FAQs.
  • Adapt language for the intended audience, using a clear, concise and accessible style.
  • Own the content on the EdPay website, including web content, help functionality and user guides, keeping them consistent and current.
  • Develop knowledge artifacts in relation to EdPay for internal and external use.
  • Accountable for the Payroll Update, creating and writing the content for any updates as the result of change.
  • Work closely with the Business Change Advisor for any other communications required to be written such as payroll calendar updates or requests.
  • Support the Senior Communications Advisor, senior leaders and other internal staff with their communication requests by translating technical information into language that can be easily interpreted by their intended audience.
  • Review existing material to remove duplication, promote consistency, identify potential improvements, and manage content.
  • Gather feedback on documentation and content within the user journey, to improve usability.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement proactively, ensuring information is captured and outputs are produced efficiently and effectively.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of content management standards and practices and act as champion for writing standards across the organisation.
  • Build capability in others through coaching, quality assurance and proactively sharing knowledge and expertise.

Content management systems

  • Utilise Management of Site Tool (MOST) to manage information on EPL’s website.
  • Use Contentful and Chameleon to provide text overlays in EdPay, such as tool tips, banners, tours and survey.

Required experience, skills and knowledge

To be successful in this position, you will need:

  • minimum two years of experience as a Technical Writer
  • strong technical expertise and capability to effectively communicate complex information to a diverse audience
  • experience owning and managing an end-to-end documentation process
  • ability to work with business units to simplify complex and technical information for various audience levels, incorporating plain language principles
  • proven ability to use data and insights to identify trends, risks and opportunities and communicate these to key stakeholders
  • able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • a collaborative working style.
